My kids, they are picky eaters. Most nights, I try to have things on the table they enjoy, but also cook dinners I enjoy. I don’t want them to hate family meal time, but I don’t want every meal to be their favorite. So I compromise – try to put one dish they like on the table, and one they don’t.
For example, if I am doing Marsala Chicken, I will put broccoli because it is my son’s favorite vegetable. Then I make them try the dish and fill up on the broccoli if they do not enjoy the alternative.
Some days, I’m not up for the battle, or maybe I’m just feeling nice, so I make something they love….like a spinach smoothie to sip on while I make a big batch of this garlic cheese bread. They think I am the coolest (at least for 5 minutes), and they sleep great with full tummies.
This garlic cheese bread is fairly simple and tastes amazing. Side dish? Main dish? You choose!
Garlic Cheese Bread
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 1/4 teaspoons rapid rise bread machine, or instant yeast
- 2-3 tablespoons butter melted
- 1-2 teaspoons minced fresh garlic
- 2 cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Mix By Hand or Mixer:
-
Mix the water, oil, and sugar.
-
Add half of flour, yeast, and salt. (If you are using dry yeast and non-instant, mix yeast with liquids and let sit for 5-10 minutes before adding flour and salt.)
-
Slowly add the rest of the flour as needed and continue to knead by hand or mixer for 5 to 7 minutes.
-
Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with towel and let rise for 1 hr.
-
Spread dough into 1/2 inch thick layer on a baking sheet.
-
Mix melted butter and garlic and spread over dough with a knife. (Totally okay if the butter spills over the edge of the dough - it makes a tasty crust!)
-
Spread cheeses on top.
-
Let rise about 15 minutes.
-
Bake for 20 minutes.
-
Remove from pan, slice into sticks with pizza cutter. Serve with marinara sauce, alfredo sauce, or ranch dressing.
Recipe Notes
Mix by Bread Machine:
Add the water, oil, sugar. Cover with flour. On top of flour, place salt and yeast.
Turn mixer on dough cycle.
Check your dough once it has incorporated all the flour. If needed, add more flour and let dough finish cycle.
Follow the rest of the steps as directed.
